I picked up these cranberries as a result of a lightening deal last week. Thanks to UPS, I just got my order Monday (2 days ago) and I must say that I am smitten. These sun-dried cranberries (according to the company’s Web site) are a different taste and texture treat from run-of-the mill dried cranberries. They are denser, both texturally and taste-wise than Newman’s Own Organics, which I have been receiving via Subscribe & Save for a couple of years now.
Noted Differences:
Fat: Oskri Organics actually lists the fat content on the label. Yes, dried cranberries nearly always have a bit of fat involved: Both Oskri Organics and Newman’s Own Organics use sunflower oil. According to the label on Newman’s Own Organics , there are 0 grams of fat in a 1/4 cup or 40 gram serving. The label on Oskri Organics indicates that there is 1 gram of fat in a 1/4 cup or 25 gram serving.
Sweeteners: Anyone who believes that cranberries are naturally sweet is sadly delusional. Newman’s Own Organics indicates that they use Organic Cane Sugar as the sweetener and each serving contains 31 grams of sugar. Oskri Organics uses apple juice as the sweetener and each serving contains 16 grams of sugar.
Calories: Both Newman’s Own Organics and Oskri Organics give a single serving size of 1/4 cup. A single serving of Newman’s Own Organics contains 130 calories, none from fat. A single serving of Oskri organics contains 76 calories, 3 from fat.
One difference that I haven’t mention but is worth noting is that the Newman’s Own Organic dried cranberries (and nearly every other dried cranberry that I have encountered) are cut in half; however the Oskri Organics are whole berries. This wholeness is part of what provides a denser texture and flavor.
